NZRC is a termly academic writing competition for New Zealand students — a structured pathway from school science to journal-standard research, and a community of students who want to go further than the classroom.
Every term we release a research prompt. You investigate, you write, you submit. A panel evaluates your paper on the same criteria a journal editor would: structure, argument, evidence, and clarity.

A research prompt is released
Each term opens with a new prompt, spanning a range of disciplines for students to investigate.
Investigate, then write
Students research the prompt and write it up as a formal paper — not a poster, not a slide deck.
Submit before the term closes
Finished papers are submitted for that term's competition ahead of the closing date.
Judged like a journal
A panel reads every paper against the standard a journal editor would use: structure, argument, evidence, clarity.
Top papers are ranked and badged
The strongest submissions earn badges, recognition, and a place on that term's rankings.
The best are nominated for publication
Top-ranked students are mentored by researchers toward real publication in a scientific journal.

Students who place in the top ranks aren't just awarded a badge. They're paired with mentors — researchers who know what a submission needs to go from a strong student paper to a manuscript ready for real publication.
